On Wednesday 8th June we had a Matariki celebration at school. This involved a powhiri to welcome our new families, tree planting and a massive shared lunch.
Team Kauri planted 2 Kauri trees at the back of the school fields.

Cycling Skills

Cycling Skills

“Screech!” The bus skidded to a stop, in front of HB’s regional sport park. Today was 22nd of March and that means it was room Ten turn to go to Cycling skills. I bounced off the bus and headed towards the others. We all sat down by a park bench while three women came and introduced themselves. There names were Amanda, Kirsty and Teressa. They talked a little about what we are going to do today, afterwards they split us up. I was put in Amanda’s group.

Later in the day, we got to go on to the field behind where we were learning. I jumped onto the bike and thought how natural it felt to have my feet rested on the pedals, with my hands clenching the bars like there is no tomorrow. And I think I love riding a bike. Anyway, on the windblown grass field My instructor, Amanda, put our little group into a circle. “Okay, now the game which we will play, is a lot like duck duck goose but with bikes and numbers.” I listened intently, ears switched on like lights. As soon as she finished explaining the rules. We started the game. Everyone got a number. – I was number 13 – and if you’re one was called then you have to get right onto the bike and race around the circle. There would also be someone else racing beside you. First on to get back wins. Last one goes in the middle. Amanda called the first two numbers. “3 and 11!” I watched the race with awe. Twitching in anticipation to see who’s gonna be victorious. Number 11 came first – Ben Wilson – leaving 3 – Lochie Goodall – in the middle of the circle.

After a few more games. We came back to the concrete area. More and more hours flew past and soon it was already time to leave. “Bye! Thank you!” Sequined room ten. One by one we all board the bus. I can’t wait to tell my mum all about today.

Swimming Recount by Ruby

Swimming Lessons With Jo

In the summer school weeks, we normally go swimming. But this year was slightly different because we had tutors/ swimming instructors. Most of the days it was quite nice but other days it wasn’t so good. We did this from the 9th of Feb to the 17th of Feb. We also still stayed in our lovely school pool. my group had Jo, but there was also Tania and Suzy. I had an all girls group. We learnt some freestyle, but we mostly had to get our breathing sorted.

The first day when I walked in I was the tiniest bit nervous but really excited to get into the pool. That day we all got really really cold because there was alot of girls in our group and most of us were standing around waiting for our turn to go. So we split everyone up into group A and group B. Group A went first and group B would wait, I was in group B with Isla, Keira, Olivia, Suriya and Tatiana. That made it alot better, Keira soon left the group because she was too good for our group.

I managed to swim every day because I didn’t get an ear infection or anything. I had to work mostly on my breathing my kicking and arms were fine but the breathing was hard, I would never get enough breath to get to the end and I would have to stand up about half way but I slowly got better as I got more tips and practise. Sometimes when we all got in it was like stepping into an ice machine.

I never really felt like going for a swim when it wasn’t such a nice day, but when I got in I enjoyed it.

Orienteering

This afternoon we have been able to do orienteering within our school. We were using electronic microchip timers. Thank you so much to Hawkes Bay Orienteering for running this for us. It was incredibly hot but so much fun. We had some very fast results in room 10. Well done to the whole class for participating so competitively but fairly.
